Advanced Italian Step-by-Step (2016)
1. Nouns, Descriptive Adjectives, and Pronouns
Nouns, articles, adjectives, and pronouns are the first elements usually studied when learning a language. They are very important and quite extensive in Italian, and I feel that they are seldom repeated or reviewed enough, or that there are sufficient exercises to master them. Therefore, I feel it is important to briefly review them again in this advanced book so that students will have additional practice.
Definition and Classification of Nouns
A noun is a word that labels persons, animals, places, things, or concepts. Nouns fall under one of the following classifications:
• Proper nouns (nomi propri), which include first names and surnames of people (Giovanni, Luigi, Maria, Silvia, Ferri, Benedetti, etc.) and names of places (Milano, Venezia, Italia, Spagna, Sicilia, Arno, etc.), must be written with a capital letter.
• Common nouns (nomi comuni), which comprise in a generic way every possible individual or class, are divided into common nouns of human beings (uomo, donna, mamma, figlio, etc.), common nouns of animals (cane, gatto, leone, giraffa), and common nouns of things (acqua, vino, sedia, tavolo, penna).
The common nouns are further classified as:
• Collective nouns (nomi collettivi), which include a group of things, such as frutta, verdura, mobili, or animated beings, such as gregge, folla, gente, etc. They are perceived as one unity. These nouns require the accompanying article and the verb to be in the singular form. C”è una grande folla in Piazza San Pietro a Roma. There is a large crowd in St. Peter Square in Rome.
• Some common nouns can be enumerated (nomi numerabili) (un bicchiere, due tavoli, tre vasi di fiori), while others cannot (nomi innumerabili) (il sangue, l”acqua, il vino). These nouns do not have a plural. One cannot say, i latti, i sangui, le acque. In the plural form they change their meanings.
The Gender of Nouns
Nouns are used in everyday speech. Italian has two genders, masculine and feminine, and two numbers, singular and plural. Gender is important because it defines the form of the articles and the adjectives that accompany nouns in sentences.
All nouns in Italian end in a vowel. If they end with a consonant, it is because they have foreign origin (film, sport, etc.).
Usually a noun”s gender is recognized by its ending. There are some indicators that will help identify whether a noun is masculine or feminine. In most cases, nouns ending in –o (uomo, libro) are masculine, and nouns ending in –a (casa, donna) are feminine. Exceptions to the rule include mano, foto, and radio, which end in –o but are feminine nouns.
Singular and Plural Masculine Nouns
Most nouns ending in –o are masculine singular and change to an –i in the plural form.
Singular and Plural Feminine Nouns
Most nouns ending in –a are feminine and change to an –e in the plural form.
Language Note:
There is a lot of confusion with some words such as mattina or mattino, tavolo or tavola and how to use them properly. The following is an attempt to clarify this.
Mattina and tavola are feminine, but mattino and tavolo are masculine.
Mattina or Mattino
Mattina and mattino have the same meaning. They are used to indicate the early part of the day. Frequently they are interchangeable.
One can equally say, le 10 del mattino, or le 10 della mattina; un mattino nuvoloso, or una mattina nuvolosa.
Some expressions, however, require the specific use of one or the other. Mattina is used as follows:
Ogni mattina, every morning
Domenica mattina, Sunday morning
Di prima mattina, first thing in the morning
Dalla mattina alla sera, all day long
Una bella mattina, a beautiful morning
Mattino is used with the following expressions:
Sul far del mattino, at dawn
Di buon mattino, early in the morning
Il buongiorno si vede dal mattino, from the start of the day one can see how the day will go.
Il mattino ha l”oro in bocca, the early bird gets the worm.
Tavolo or Tavola
These two words also are of different gender. They have a similar meaning, but tavolo is used most commonly to refer to its generic meaning, and it is often followed by words that indicate its specific use:
Tavolo da biliardo, billiard table
Tavolo da ping-pong, ping-pong table, etc.
Prenotare un tavolo, to reserve a table
Comprare un tavolo, to buy a table
Tavola, instead, is referred to as a wooden plank, but its most common use is for the piece of furniture where people eat their meals. It is used in the following expressions:
Essere a tavola, to be at the table
Andare a tavola, go to the table
Mettere in tavola, to put food on the table
Sedersi a tavola, sit at the table

Language Note:
Plural of Feminine Nouns Ending in –ca, –ga, –cia, –gie
Feminine nouns ending in –ca or –ga change in the plural to –che and –ghe (monaca nun, collega colleague), by adding an h after the c and the g: monache, colleghe. The masculine plural nouns ending in –co and –go form their plurals in –chi and –ghi: monarca monarch and collegacolleague change to monarchi, colleghi. There are many masculine nouns ending in –co, amico, nemico, and so on, that change to –ci in the plural (amici, nemici), and so on. Belga (the inhabitant of Belgium), however, is an exception and in the masculine plural changes to belgi, while in the feminine is belghe.
Other nouns that end in –cia and –gia change to the plural according to the letter preceding the –c or the –g. If there is a vowel preceding the –g or the –c, the i stays; if there is a consonant the i goes.
The words that make the plural keeping the i are as follows.
Another instance where the –i remains in the plural is if the accent is on the –i- of the last syllable:

The diminutive suffixes –ino, –ina, and –etto indicate something small, or they can be added to express tenderness and affection.
A diminutive ending can be added to an adjective:

Reading Comprehension
