Adverbs modify an adjective, a verb, or another adverb. In Italian they usually follow the verb they modify, but they precede the adjectives.

Formation of Adverbs

Adjectives ending in –o form the adverb adding –mente to the feminine singular. Adverbs ending in –e also form the adverb by adding –mente. Adverbs do not change number and gender. The suffix –mente corresponds to the English suffix ly. Following are a few adjectives and their corresponding adverbs.

Adjectives ending in –le or –re preceded by a vowel drop the –e and add –mente to form the adverb. Some adverbs have forms that differ from the adjectives altogether.

There are some exceptions.

Adjectives ending in –le or –re preceded by a vowel form the adverb by dropping the –e before –mente. Following are some of them:

A Word About Some Adverbs

Adverbs of time such as oggi, domani, and so on, usually precede the verb. Presto and tardi follow the verb. Adverbs expressing doubt, forse, usually precede the verb. Sicuramente and certamente follow the verb:

In compound tenses, adverbs of time (oggi, ieri, etc.) and location (dietro, dove, etc.) follow the past participle. Some adverbs, such as affatto, ancora, appena, già, mai, and sempre can also be placed between the auxiliary and the past participle:

Note: With the adverbs su and giù, qua and là, the first consonant of the adverb is doubled in speech and writing: quassù (up here), quaggiù (down here), lassù (up here), laggiù (down there).
