Nucleophilic Substitution Reactions at sp3 Carbons
15.1 Introduction

Before we actually start looking at the substitution reactions of this chapter, let us review some of the important concepts and terminologies that we will be using throughout this chapter and the rest of our course in organic chemistry. An important concept to remember is that the basis for most reactions that will be encountered in this chapter and most of the future chapters involves the attraction of a species that has a pair of electrons or is a negative species to another species that has a positive or partially positive charge. You will recall that there are different terminologies to describe the species involved and we will review the meaning of these terminologies and concepts in the next few sections of this chapter then we will apply those concepts as we analyze various substitution reactions at sp3 carbons.
