Heteroatomic Functional Groups and Organic Nomenclature
3.3 Nomenclature of Thiols

Thiols are organic compounds that have the ─SH functionality and they are named as thiols. The -ane of the corresponding alkane is unchanged, but thiol is added to alkane to form one word, alkanethiol. In naming thiols, the longest continuous chain that contains the ─SH functionality forms the root name as shown below.

The thiol (─SH) functionality takes priority over branching, which is similar to that in the naming of alcohols. The position of the ─SH functionality must be specified with a number. In the above example, the number 3 is used to specify the position of the ─SH functionality.

Problem 3.6

i. Is the IUPAC name shown for the compound shown below correct?Image

ii. Give line-angle structures for the following molecules.

1. 3,3-Dimethyl-2-pentanethiol

2. 4-Methyl-3-penten-2-thiol

3. 3-Methylcyclohexanethiol
