Addition Reactions Involving Alkenes and Alkynes
8.1 Introduction
The word addition when used in chemistry implies the addition of atom(s), ion(s), or molecule(s) to a reactant molecule to form a new molecule as product or an intermediate, which eventually goes on to form a final product. Two examples of addition reactions that were briefly mentioned in Chapter 6 are shown in Reactions (8-1) and (8-2).

(8-2)
In this chapter, a much deeper analysis of this type of reaction will be carried out. Also, a detailed mechanism of how addition reactions occur will be carried out, which will assist in the prediction of possible addition products. The concept of acids and bases will be essential in understanding and explaining some of the observations of addition reactions.
