Speed Up Your French: Strategies to avoid common errors (2016)
Chapter 8. Use of prepositions
Different constructions in English and French after a verb
1 Verbs that take a direct object in French
Be careful not to suppose that because an English verb takes a preposition before a noun, the French verb will necessarily behave in the same way. For example, although the English verb ‘to look’ takes ‘at’ before a noun, the French verb regarder does not usually require a preposition, e.g.
Nous regardons un film à la télévision.
(We are looking at a film on TV.)
Note, however, that you will sometimes find regarder + à, but it means ‘to watch’ in the sense of ‘to think about / pay attention to’, e.g.
Il ne regarde pas à la dépense; c’est la qualité qui compte pour lui.
(He doesn’t think about expense; quality is what counts as far as he is concerned.)
Learn the expression: à y regarder de plus près (on closer examination).
Other English verbs to beware of include the following. In each case, the French translation equivalent takes a direct object (with no preposition before it).
approuver une décision |
to approve of a decision |
attendre le bus |
to wait for the bus |
chercher un dossier |
to look for a file |
demander un service |
to ask for a favour |
écouter la radio |
to listen to the radio |
espérer quelque chose |

opérer quelqu’un |
to operate on someone |
payer un repas |
to pay for a meal |
remplir un formulaire |
to fill in a form |
viser les jeunes |
to aim at young people |
voter quelque chose |
to vote for something |
Note: Remember to use direct object pronouns in French with all these verbs, e.g.
Avez-vous trouvé mon dossier? Je ne l’ai pas encore cherché.
(Have you found my file? I haven’t looked for it yet.)

Mnemonic device
There are two ways to remember how to construct these French verbs. With some of them, you can rephrase the English, e.g. ‘I gave my mother a present’ as ‘I gave a present TO my mother’.
For the rest, remember the acrononyms: TAT (Teach, Advise, Tell) and FAF (Forbid, Allow, Forgive).
4 Verbs that take de + noun in French
In some cases, a French verb takes de before a noun whereas its English translation equivalent takes a direct object. Some of the most common examples are:

Note the expression: à n’en pas douter (undoubtedly, without a doubt).
Remember to use appropriate pronouns, such as dont and en, to reflect usage with de, e.g.
L’ordinateur dont il se sert est détraqué.
(The computer which he is using is on the blink.)
A-t-il terminé sa dissertation ? J’en doute.
(Has he finished his essay? I doubt it.)
There are some other French verbs that also take de + noun. Their English translation equivalents take a variety of different prepositions, such as ‘on’, ‘for’ and ‘at’, e.g.
dépendre de |
to depend on |
remercier de |
to thank for |
rire de |
to laugh at |
vivre de |
to live on |
5 Verbs that take other prepositions in French
There are many verbs in French that take a different preposition from their English translation equivalent. They include:
consister en |
to consist of |
entrer dans |
to enter + direct object |
se fâcher contre |
to get angry with |
If in doubt, check in the French half of the dictionary to see which preposition to use.
