Uses of Avere

Avere (to have)

The h in the first third person singular and the third person plural are never pronounced. It is used to distinguish between the verb form and other words with the same pronunciation but different meanings:

My name is Giovanna. I am 25 years old. I am very lucky because I have many friends who live near me.

My mother is a very good cook, so my friends like to come to my house. She fixes them the specialties they like. My friends are always hungry and thirsty when they come to my house. She cooks for hours because she is afraid not to have enough food for everybody.

Sometimes my mother is in a hurry because she has many things to do, and she does not have enough time to make the delicacies she likes to make for my friends. In winter when we are cold, she gives us a special Italian hot chocolate and cookies. In summer when we are too warm after we return from the beach, she makes us lemonade. Often, in the evening, she is tired and sleepy, and she cannot wait to go to bed.

Verb Fare (to do, to make)

The verb fare (to do, to make) expresses the basic ideas of doing or making something. It derives from the Latin facere. There is no distinction in Italian between to do and to make. To do the exercises and to make a cake both use fare.

Fare does not follow the regular pattern of conjugation with the infinitive stem + endings. It used to be regarded as an irregular –ere verb, but today it is considered an irregular –are verb:

Reading Comprehension

Visita della mia amica Isabella

Questo fine settimana, viene a farmi una breve visita la mia amica Isabella. A lei piace il mare e dato che vivo in una zona balneare viene sempre volentieri. Voglio trascorrere una giornata piacevole e divertente con lei.

Prima faccio benzina poi la vado a prendere alla stazione con la macchina. Una volta arrivata, andremo a fare la spesa per acquistare quello che ci serve per la colazione e se non facciamo troppo tardi, possiamo andare sul lungomare a fare una passeggiata e fare fotografie. Non ho voglia di fare da mangiare perchè fa molto caldo. Preferisco portare Isabella al ristorante vicino alla spiaggia, in un locale che conosco e dove si mangia bene a prezzi modici.

Se il ristorante non è gremito di gente e non dobbiamo aspettare troppo, possiamo sederci nella veranda. Se siamo fortunate e riusciamo ad avere un tavolo in un angolo tranquillo, mentre mangiamo, potremo ammirare lo splendido paesaggio, respirare il profumo inebriante del mare e fare quattro chiacchiere.

Non possiamo fare troppo tardi, perchè Isabella deve partire presto domani mattina, deve riposare e fare colazione perchè il viaggio è lungo. Stiamo al ristorante per molte ore e parliamo del più e del meno. Nessuno ci disturba. Chiediamo il conto e quando ce lo portano decidiamo di fare alla romana.
