4. Some common adverbs

1 Adverbs to use in everyday conversation

Just as in English, you can often answer a question simply by using an adverb.

Vieni alla festa? – Forse.	Are you coming to the party? – Maybe.
Deve proprio partire? –	Do you really have to go? –
Sì, purtroppo.	Yes, unfortunately.

The following are particularly useful adverbs:

ecco here

Ecco l’autobus!	Here’s the bus!
Ecco la sua birra!	Here’s your beer!

Note that you can say ecco (meaning here you are) when you hand somebody something. Ecco combines with the pronouns lo, la, li and le to mean Here she is, Here they are and so forth:

Dov’è Carla? – Eccola!	Where’s Carla? – Here she is!
Non vedo i libri – Ah, eccoli!	I can’t see the books – Oh, here they are!
Eccolo!	Here he is!

anche too

È venuta anche mia sorella.

My sister came too.

certo certainly; of course

Certo che puoi.	Of course you can.
Certo che sì.	Certainly.

così so, like this, like that

È così simpatica!	She’s so nice!
Si apre così.	It opens like this.
Non si fa così.	You don’t do it like that.

davvero really

È successo davvero.

It really happened.

forse perhaps, maybe

Forse hanno ragione.

Maybe they’re right.

proprio really

Sono proprio stanca.

I’m really tired.

purtroppo unfortunately

Purtroppo non posso venire.

Unfortunately I can’t come.

Tip

These adverbs are such common words that it’s a good idea to learn as many as possible.

2 Adverbs that tell you HOW MUCH

molto, poco, troppo and tanto are used with adjectives, verbs and other adverbs;

Use molto to mean very or very much.

Sono molto stanca.	I’m very tired.
Ti piace? – Sì, molto.	Do you like it? – yes, very much.
Ora mi sento molto meglio.	I feel much better now.

Use poco to mean not very or not very much.

Questa mela è poco buona.	This apple isn’t very nice.
Mi piacciono poco.	I don’t like them very much.
Ci vado poco spesso.	I don’t go there very often.

Use tanto to mean so or so much.

Questo libro è tanto noioso.	This book is so boring.
Tu mi manchi tanto.	I miss you so much.
Mi sento tanto meglio.	I feel so much better.

Use troppo to mean too or too much.

È troppo caro.	It’s too expensive.
Parlano troppo.	They talk too much.
Le sei? È troppo presto.	Six o’clock? That’s too early.

Note that molto, poco, troppo and tanto can also be used as adjectives. When you use them as adverbs they do NOT agree with anything.

3 Adverbs that tell you TO WHAT EXTENT

abbastanza quite, enough

È abbastanza alta.	She’s quite tall.
Non studia abbastanza.	He doesn’t study enough.

appena just, only just

L’ho appena fatto.	I’ve just done it.
L’indirizzo ere appena leggibile.	The address was only just legible.

piuttosto quite, rather

Fa piuttosto caldo oggi.	It’s quite warm today.
È piuttosto lontano.	It’s rather a long way.

quasi nearly

Sono quasi pronta.	I’m nearly ready.
Hanno quasi finito.	They’ve nearly finished.

4 Adverbs that tell you WHEN

adesso now

Non posso farlo adesso.

I can’t do it now.

ancora still, yet

Sei ancora a letto?	Are you still in bed?
Silvia non è ancora arrivata.	Silvia’s not here yet.

domani tomorrow

Ci vediamo domani.

See you tomorrow.

dopo after, later

Ci vediamo dopo.

See you later.

già already

Te l’ho già detto.

I’ve already told you.

ieri yesterday

Ieri ha piovuto molto.

It rained a lot yesterday.

mai never, ever

Non sono mai stato in America.	I’ve never been to America.
Sei mai stato in America?	Have you ever been to America?

oggi today

Oggi andiamo al mare.

We’re going to the seaside today.

ora now

Ora cosa facciamo?

What are we going to do now?

poi then

E poi che cos’è successo?

And then what happened?

presto soon, early

Arriverà presto.	He’ll be here soon.
Mi alzo sempre presto.	I always get up early.

prima before

Prima non lo sapevo.

I didn’t know that before.

spesso often

Vanno spesso in centro.

They often go into town.

subito at once

Fallo subito!

Do it at once.

tardi late

Oggi mi sono alzata tardi.

I got up late today.

5 Adverbs that tell you WHERE

là there

Vieni via di là.

Come away from there.

laggiù down there, over there

È laggiù da qualche parte.	It’s down there somewhere.
È apparso laggiù in lontananza.	It appeared over there in the distance.

lassù up there

un paesino lassù in montagna

a little village up there in the mountains

lì there

Mettilo lì.

Put it there.

qua here

Eccomi qua!

I’m here!

qui here

Vieni qui.

Come here.

Note that lì has an accent to distinguish it from the pronoun li (meaning them) and là has an accent to distinguish it from la (meaning the, her or it).

ci there

Ci sei mai stato?

Have you ever been there?

dappertutto everywhere

Ho cercato dappertutto.

I looked everywhere.

lontano a long way away

Abita lontano.

He lives a long way away.

sotto underneath, downstairs

Porta una giacca con una maglietta sotto.	He’s wearing a jacket with a t-shirt underneath.
Il bagno è sotto.	The bathroom is downstairs.

sopra up, on top

qui sopra	up here
Il dizionario è sopra quella pila di libri.	The dictionary is on top of that pile of books.

fuori outside

Ti aspetto fuori.

I’ll wait for you outside.

dentro inside

Vai dentro.

Go inside.

indietro back

Torniamo indietro.

Let’s turn back.

davanti at the front

Voglio sedermi davanti.

I want to sit at the front.

6 Adverbs consisting of more than one word

In English you sometimes use a phrase instead of a single word to give information about time, place and so on, and the same is true in Italian.

una volta once

una volta la settimana

once a week

due volte twice

Ho provato due volte.

I tried twice.

molte volte many times

L’ho fatto molte volte.

I’ve done it many times.

da qualche parte somewhere

Ho lasciato le chiavi da qualche parte.

I’ve left my keys somewhere.

qualche volta sometimes

Qualche volta arriva in ritardo.

She sometimes arrives late.

di solito usually

Di solito arrivo prima.

I usually get here earlier.
