Note that in the numbers 21, 31, 41 and so on, the final vowel of venti, trenta and quaranta is lost: ventuno, trentuno, quarantuno. The same thing happens with the numbers 28, 38, 48 and so on: ventotto, trentotto, quarantotto. When tre is combined with another number it takes an accent: trentatré (33), centotré (103), milletré (1003).

1 uno, un or una?

In Italian the same word – uno – is used for the number one and the indefinite article a.

When using uno as a number in front of a noun, follow the same rules as for the indefinite article.

un uomo

one man

uno scienzato

one scientist

una ragazza

one girl

un’anatra

For more information on the Indefinite article, see page 17.

When replying to a question, use uno if what’s referred to is masculine, and una if it’s feminine.

Quanti giorni? – Uno.

How many days? – One.

Quante notti? – Una.

How many nights? – One.

Use uno when counting, unless referring to something or someone feminine.

Do NOT use un to translate one hundred, or one thousand.

cento metri

mille euro

one thousand euros

You do use un with milione (meaning million) and miliardo (meaning thousand million).

Quante persone? – Un milione.

How many people? – One million.

un milione di dollari

one million dollars

un miliardo di euro

one thousand million euros

Note that when un milione and un miliardo are followed by a noun, di is added.

2 Which numbers have plurals?

The only numbers which have plurals are mille, milione, and miliardo. Due, tre, quattro and so on are added to mila to make duemila (meaning two thousand), tremila (meaning three thousand) and quattromila (meaning four thousand).

mille euro

one thousand euros

diecimila euro

ten thousand euros

un milione di dollari

one million dollars

venti milioni di dollari

twenty million dollars

un miliardo di sterline

one thousand million pounds

due miliardi di sterline

3 Full stop or comma?

700,000 (seven hundred thousand)

5.000.000 (cinque milioni)

5,000,000 (five million)
