Addition Reactions Involving Carbonyls and Nitriles
9.1 Introduction

In this chapter, we will continue our discussion of addition reactions, but we will be examining the addition of an electrophile and nucleophile to carbon—oxygen and carbon—nitrogen multiple bonds, instead of carbon—carbon multiple bonds. As we will see, these reactions are very important, especially in biology. For example, a very stable form of glucose, comes about due to an addition reaction involving an intramolecular addition of an alcohol to the carbon—oxygen double bond of an aldehyde functional group.
