Chapter 8. Use of prepositions

Translation of English phrasal verbs into French

1 One verb in French to translate an English phrasal verb (verb + preposition)

Prepositions are often used in English to form so-called ‘phrasal verbs’, made up of a verb + preposition, e.g. ‘to go out’, ‘to put out’, ‘to throw out’. These verbs are most commonly translated into French by one verb with no preposition. You will find many examples in a good bilingual dictionary by reading through the entry on the English verb in question, e.g. ‘to put’ with its subsections, ‘to put aside’, ‘to put back’, etc.

to go out – sortir

Nous sortons tous les soirs.

(We go out every evening.)

Elle sort avec Jean-Paul.

(She is going out with Jean-Paul.)

Contrast the emphatic use of ‘outside’, as opposed to ‘inside’ in:

Allez jouer dehors!

(Go and play outside!)

to put out – sortir + direct object or éteindre + direct object

N’oubliez pas de sortir la poubelle demain matin.

(Don’t forget to put the bin out tomorrow morning.)

Les pompiers ont réussi à éteindre les flammes.

(The firefighters managed to put out the flames.)

to throw out – jeter + direct object

Il faut jeter toutes ces affaires à la poubelle.

(You must throw all those things out.)

2 How to translate an English phrasal verb of movement

To translate an English phrasal verb of movement, e.g. ‘He ran up the stairs’, into French, you need to specify first of all the direction of the movement with a verb and then to indicate the manner of the movement with an adverbial phrase or a gerund, e.g.

Elle a monté l’escalier en courant.

(She ran up the stairs.)

Ils ont traversé le fleuve à la nage.

(They swam across the river.)

Sometimes a verb alone is sufficient, e.g.

Elle a traversé la rue.

(She walked across the road.)

Ils ont franchi le mur.

(They got over the wall.)
