2. Definite and Indefinite Articles
A noun can be used alone but more frequently is preceded by a definite or indefinite article also known as the determiner. The definite article, or determiner, is used more often in Italian than in English. In English the definite article has only one form: the. In Italian there are different forms depending on the gender, number, and first letter of the noun or adjective it precedes.
The definite articles in Italian are as follows:
• Il (plural i) is used before masculine nouns beginning with most consonants.
• Lo (plural gli) is used before masculine nouns beginning with s + a consonant, z, ps, pn, gn, or a vowel. In the last instance, the vowel of the article will be elided as shown below:

Combined Prepositions
Sometimes the definite article is used with the simple prepositions di, a, da, in, su, forming the combined prepositions. To make it clear, below is the chart of all the definite articles and the various prepositions:
The preposition di changes to de, and in changes to ne, before combining with the articles.
The preposition con is not usually combined with the article except when using con + il = col, and con + i = coi. When using the other articles, the separate form is preferred. So, we will have con la, con lo, and so on.
The prepositions per, tra, and fra remain separate from the article: per la strada, fra la gente, tra gli scogli. (You will learn more about the prepositions later in the book.)
