3. Descriptive Adjectives
An adjective is a word used which modifies a noun or a pronoun. Descriptive adjectives provide information and specify the quality of the noun they accompany. They agree in gender and number with the noun they modify.
Most Italian descriptive adjectives end in –o in the masculine singular, in –a in the feminine singular, in –i in the masculine plural, and in –e in the feminine plural.
Adjectives Ending in –o
Descriptive adjectives ending in –o have four forms: masculine singular, feminine singular, masculine plural, and feminine plural.
The plurals of adjectives whose stems end in –c or –g have spelling or sound changes.
Adjectives ending in –e in the singular have only two forms: a singular form ending in –e and a plural form ending in –i. These forms are used for both the masculine and the feminine.
Some descriptive adjectives have three different endings: one in common for the masculine and the feminine singular –a, one for the masculine plural ending in –i, and one for the feminine plural ending in –e.
More of the same are:
altruista altruist
femminista feminist
razzista racist
Invariable Adjectives
The adjectives in this category do not change the gender or number. They are:
pari even
dispari odd

Some adjectives that indicate a color:
Note: The adjectives arancione orange and marrone brown can also be used in the plural changing to: arancioni and marroni.
L”aggettivo arrosto is always used in the singular:
La zia Maria faceva sempre delle ottime patate arrosto. Aunt Maria used to make excellent roasted potatoes.
The adjectives ending with an accented vowel and those of foreign origin also do not change:
Generally unchanged are the adjectives formed by an adjective of color + an element of comparison:
verde bottiglia bottle green
rosso fuoco fire red
verde smeraldo emerald green
bianco panna cream white
bianco sporco dirty white
giallo ocra ochre yellow
verde militare military green

The superlative adjectives in Italian agree in gender and number with the noun they modify.
The relative superlative is formed by using the definite article + noun + più/meno + adjective + di + the object compared:
The superlative absolute is the equivalent of the English very + adjective, an adjective + –est, or most + adjective. In Italian this can be expressed in several ways:
• By placing molto/tanto, parecchio or assai in front of the adjective:

Adjectives and Possessive Pronouns
A possessive adjective in Italian consists of the definite article and a possessive adjective form. The possessive adjective agrees in gender and number with the following noun. In Italian the definite article usually precedes the possessive adjective, and both are repeated before each noun: la mia casa (my house), il mio cappello (my hat). The possessive adjectives are as follows:
In Italian, il suo, la sua, i suoi, and le sue can be rather ambiguous. To resolve this ambiguity, you may replace the possessive with di lui when referring to a masculine possessor, or di lei when referring to a feminine possessor:
When a family noun in the singular form has no diminutive or augmentative suffix, the article is never used with a possessive adjective. Mamma e papà, are treated as diminutives; therefore, they can take an article with a possessive adjective, although it is not uncommon to omit the article.
Babbo instead of papà is used in many areas of Italy.
The article is used before the possessive adjective if the family noun is plural, is modified by a noun, another adjective, or has a diminutive suffix.
The masculine plural possessive i miei, i tuoi, and i suoi may be used as a noun, and it means my parents, your parents, and his or her parents, respectively:
The definite article in front of the possessive adjectives may be replaced by an indefinite article, a demonstrative adjective, or a number:
The adjective proprio (one”s own) is used to reinforce a possessive adjective, in the same way as in English:
In order to avoid ambiguity from third person possessive adjectives, the third person possessive adjective is replaced by proprio to specify that the possessor is the same person as the subject.
This could be interpreted as if he cleaned his own room or somebody else”s room. The third person possessive is replaced by propria to specify that he cleaned his own room:

Reading Comprehension
